I decided to start growing my beard because I just recently separated from the Air Force. In the military, facial hair is frowned upon and strict regulations are imposed to keep men from growing a beard. I made a promise to myself that when I got out of the military, I would grow the beard from day one. It's almost as if it's a symbol of my freedom and a reminder that I can grow my facial hair any d@mn way I please.

How do I feel about my beard? I love it! I've picked up the habit of stroking the beard when I'm engaged in stimulating conversation. And it feels good to know that not that many of my friends are as beard-capable as I am. I often get compliments on it (along with some rude comments). But the best part is knowing at the end of the day I'm doing what I want with my facial hair. While I DO love the beard, it does have some downsides. I often wish that my hair wasn't so wiry. It's rather curly, which is a different look than what I'm really going for. We'll see how it looks as the years go by though.
