As soon as it began growing, I knew I wanted to grow a beard. Over the years I have come to feel that it is slightly weird and unnatural for men to shave their beards. It would be like deer purposely chopping their antlers off.

How do I feel about my beard? I began growing a beard when I was pretty young. I was about fifteen or sixteen. I liked the attention it garnered. I liked that and the fact that I had a pretty good success rate of being able to walk into a gas station and buy beer without getting carded. I am twenty-eight now and I have only shaved my beard completely off maybe three or four times. Every time I did, I felt incredibly self-conscious and awkward. I feel that my beard is a part of who I am. I have grown the goatee part of my beard pretty long at times. The longest I grew it, I could touch my belly button with it when it was braided. Now, I usually keep it fairly trimmed and what I consider short. I try to keep it within about one and a half to three inches. At some point in my life, when I am older, I will probably let it go again.
